Lovell Wins Re-election

Two-term City Councilwoman Sue Lovell coasted to an eight-point victory over the Rev. Andrew C. Burks, who has run and now lost in five races for city council.

“I’m just very humbled and very grateful to the voters of the city of Houston,” Lovell said Saturday night.

Lovell said her priorities heading into her third two-year term on council included addressing Houston’s infrastructure, especially working on drainage and flooding, putting police officers on the street and dealing with the city’s economic issues.

During the campaign, Lovell ran upon her tenure on council, saying it would be necessary during the next two years to have people with experience to help guide Houston’s decision-making during difficult budgetary times.

Burks said the city’s budget problems reflected poorly on the incumbent members of council. He campaigned with the aim of creating an “incubator” program to help small businesses, reducing crime by intervention initiatives in city schools and improving city services.

Vice Mayor Pro Tem and Council Member Sue Lovell joined Crime Stoppers Houston on Wednesday for a press conference announcing that Crime Stoppers is accepting tips from citizens about graffiti and also offering cash rewards for tips if information leads to the identification, charging, or arrest of individuals involved in graffiti incidents.

Vice Mayor Pro Tem and Council Member Sue Lovell represented Mayor Bill White at the November 23 press conference announcing the annual Mayor’s Holiday Celebration, which took place in Hermann Square in front of City Hall on Friday, December 4, 5:30-8:30 p.m. Afterward, the Council Member posed at the base of the Official Holiday Tree along with Santa.

On November 24, Sue helped dedicate the Community Tree, a new art project at the Acres Home Multi-Service Center on November 24. The steel sculpture, created by local artist Tim Glover, is one of the neighborhood art projects funded through the City of Houston and the Houston Arts Alliance. At the dedication, Council Member Lovell greeted community leader Mrs. James Johnson.

After helping to open the new Living Bridge in Memorial Park on December 1, Vice Mayor Pro Tem and Council Member Lovell strolled across the pedestrian/bicycle bridge, holding a piece of the holiday-greenery “ribbon” used in the ribbon cutting.

Council Member Lovell represented Mayor Bill White at the press conference.

Sue Celebrates Dedication of New SPARK Park in Pleasantville

Sue Works on Ervan Chew Park Improvements

Vice Mayor Pro Tem and Council Member Sue Lovell recently met with staff from the City of Houston staff to discuss proposed improvements to Ervan Chew Park in Montrose. These changes will include a splash pad, a relocated basketball half-court, and an enhanced soccer area. Council Member Lovell met on Monday with Dan Pederson (on the left) of the Houston Parks and Recreation Department and Duncan Elliott of the General Services Department.

Sue Joins Community Leaders for HMAAC Ribbon-Cutting

Vice Mayor Pro Tem and Council Member Sue Lovell joined board members of the Houston Museum of African American Culture, other elected officials, and community notables for the October 17 ribbon-cutting ceremony at the building that will house the Houston Museum of African American Culture. The museum, which will explore the historical, cultural, and spiritual heritage of African Americans, will open to the public in 2011 in the Houston Museum District.

Sue Recognizes Progressive Amateur Boxing Association

Vice Mayor Pro Tem and Council Member Sue Lovell congratulated the Rev. Ray Martin, founder and president of the Progressive Amateur Boxing Association, on the grant that PABA recently received for after-school programs through the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act. Council Member Lovell was instrumental in securing the grant for PABA, which provides athletic and education programs serving young people in the community. PABA is a Houston institution located in Third Ward, and one of 72 local nonprofit organizations to receive grants awarded through Gulf Coast Community Services Association.
