Finding Common Ground:
Preserving Our Past
Sue Lovell never bought the argument that Houston’s growth has to come at the expense of strong neighborhoods. Sue likes Houston’s reputation as a pro-growth, low-regulation business town – and believes that historic preservation goes hand in hand with economic development.
“There are 2 kinds of residential developers,” Lovell says. “The people who want to make a good living by building new houses and renovating old ones, and the people who want to make a good neighborhood by investing in their own homes. Both are developers, and both rightly want to protect their investments.”
As the Chair of City Council’s Historic Preservation Sub-Committee during her first term, Sue helped create Houston’s first protected historic district, shielding more than 200 historic buildings from demolition in the Old Sixth Ward. She continues working to strengthen Houston’s historic preservation ordinance – and her talent for bringing people with opposing views together to find solutions was a big part of these successful efforts.
